The Ever Changing Landscape of Sports

Holy cow some crazy stuff has gone down the past couple weeks regarding the sporting world, both in the US and the entire world.  But first I am going to cover the big changes happening in the US, the College Athletic Conferences shakeup.

First let us take a look at the colleges that have officially moved onto different conferences.  So we can ignore all of the Big 12 South, we can focus on Colorado, Nebraska, and Boise State, yes Boise State is that important.  We will take a look at things in chronological order, so Colorado is up for discussion.  Why did they move?  At this point I am not so sure really.  Yea they are kind of out there in the West but I wouldn't classify them as a Pac-10 school.  I guess the campus might be different, better views than the rest of the Big 12, and more artistic? architecture.  But it is definitely close enough to the Pacific that inclusion into the Pac-10 will work, and probably work well.  That same day Boise State moved to the Mountain West.  This move will put the Mountain West in as one of th BCS schools.  They were already being considered and this will simply put the finishing touches on the move.  With the successes of both Utah and TCU in the conference, and now adding Boise State's history, if the MWC does NOT get an invite it will be a great shame for the BCS if they continue to ignore them.

Now lets move to the real big news, what some would consider the most important move the entire realignment.  Nebraska is going to be a Big 10 member starting July of 2011.  So next year the huskers will be playing the likes of Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State in all forms of athletics.  For years I have been openly claiming the Big 10 is a weak conference, regarding football.  For all their football prowess they haven't performed in any of the big bowls, but I suppose the Big 12 hasn't been that great either.  But now because of it the Big 12 is to be falling apart with this move, a conference that had such promise, but with unequal distribution of everything from Championship games, money, to main offices, with Nebraska and the North getting the short end of the stick on all of them.  I hate that it leaves the Iowa State and the rest of the remaining Big 8 schools out on a limb, but at the same time, you can't blame Nebraska for doing it.  They are a big enough school, reputation and enrollment wise that they do not need to continue taking this crap from the south and/or Texas.  I just hope that Iowa State can land on its feet if/when the Big 12 dissolves.  It is a good school and it has a very strong fan base.  Whatever  conference it joins or stays in, it will be a proud member, and one the conference will be proud of.

And for around the world, well there is only one thing on its mind, the World cup in South Africa.  Everywhere else in the world this conference shakeup would be relegated to page 8 under the Tide ad, but only in the States is it front page news.  Anyway the World Cup got off to a great start with RSA forcing a draw with Mexico in an exciting game.  France was also stymied out of a win, making me happy on both fronts.  My heart is pushing for RSA to make it out of their group, just because they are the home country.  But that probably wont happen.  The other big news is the match tonight pitting the US against England.  My guess is 2-1 England. I'll be rooting for the US of course but England is a better team overall, so we shall see. I'm taking the trendy pick and going with Spain, but I won't be surprised if they don't win.

That is all for now, but there will probably be some World Cup updates, as something extremely stupid or wrongfully will be done.  Until then laters.

"I find your lack of faith disturbing"

Something that has come to my attention recently is a lack of faith.  Not only does there seem to be a lack of faith in the people around the world, but also myself as an individual.  It certainly creeps me out, and it is something that has slowly been manifesting the past couple years.

It is easy to see faith has left the world as a whole the past decades.  With the U.S attempting to fix everything in the middle East, and the Middle East hating them for it after begging for it to happen.  With no one actually thinking that South Africa would be able to host the World Cup without troubles, despite the fact that now it looks like they will be able to do so.  With news outlets spinning news so far in both directions, no one has faith in them to actually do what they are supposed to do, broadcast real news.  There just isn't enough time to go over everything that shows this lack of faith filling mankind.

So I want to delve into a little of my own.  Recently I told Whit that I am scared because I don't feel like I have anything to believe in.  I will say that I believe in our marriage and everything that comes along with it.  But in regards to anything else, I am pretty much blank.  I recently read "The Gargoyle" by Andrew Davidson.  I can't say that it was my favorite book ever, but it did make me think about a few things.  It is a story of a man going through his own Dante's Inferno and how he has to change his life in order to be happy with himself.  Believe me I am not comparing moving to Switzerland and being burned alive, just some situations make you think about things that you normally wouldn't.

So I started thinking about religion more, no surprise since I read a majority of the book while on a train to and from Rome/Vatican City.  I thought about how religion was such a key part of people's lives hundreds of years ago and what has happened to remove it from Western culture?  Has the advent of science and increased skepticism throughout culture forced us to push away something that was vital to the human race for thousands of years?  Now instead of putting our faith into a greater good, or a almighty being, we simply put it in our money.  We think that our money will save us, that if we have enough money, that everything will be OK.  But if we simply look back we see that people would believe that if they put enough faith in their God(s) they would be OK.

So, needless to say, I am stuck at a crossroads.  I want to believe, in something, but unfortunately I don't know what.  Right now I don't really have anything I can stake my life to, like a cure for cancer or a new pollutant free energy source, so that brings it down to either religion, which is only free in America as long as you don't count the collection plate.  And come on, you know what I'm talking about, if you don't put anything in there everyone looks at you, especially your conscience.  Or I can believe in money, which has been working for the past hundred years, but it kind of seems a little empty at the moment.  Whit and I moved here because she would be making more money and really help her career, but all that has done is leave me a bit more lonely than I would like and put a severe strain on our marriage.  I have never been a religious person so to put faith in something that I personally have kept at arms length because of my own skepticism doesn't seem like the right fit either.  Kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I still don't know what I should be looking for in the next couple of months, but I do know I'm not going to find it under my pillow, or sock drawer, or under the kitchen sink; don't worry I already looked.  I will just have to keep my eyes open to find something, because it is probably going to hit me in the nose before I even see it.

Things they are a changing

Sorry it has been so long for me to write on here.  The past few months have been a crazy ride, and a ride that is actually coming to a close quite soon.  On July 30th I will be flying back to the States.  But that doesn't necessarily mean i will be done with this site.  Not at all, I will be more consistent with my writing, but it will be from back in the States, and here for the next couple months.  This is just an update, I will be putting up a new post right after this one.

It's Been awhile

Oi has it ever.  Sorry about that but I have been busy lately...well as busy as a part time working, stay at home...husband can be.  But then again luckily there are bunches of stuff to talk about.  For starters, Whit and I went to France to go snowboarding!

Now you may ask, "Why the hell did you move to Switzerland just to go snowboarding in France?" Now that is a valid question, but it would make less sense to travel to France to go snowboarding when living in Minnesota, well at least cheaper :)  But the reason we went was to meet up with Laura, someone we haven't seen since we moved here.  And if it wasn't for the move, we probably wouldn't see her ever, which is pretty sad to think about.  But on topic, snowboarding hurts. As you can see from some of the pics on facebook, I ate snow, a lot. I was hitting the ground almost more than I was boarding on top of it.  Even if it is powder it still hurt.  The bad thing is, Whit didn't even get the best crash(es) of the weekend.  I mean I'm talking, flying down a hill, catching the toe edge, and smacking face first in the snow, goggles fly off, hat flies off, arms flailing, and snow everywhere fall.  Like the falls you see in any type of bloopers video you can think of.  But other than those crashes it was a blast, best way to learn snowboarding is on an actual mountain.

We also had Mish come visit us for a week and that was exciting.  We went to an authentic Swiss fondue restaurant, Bern, and that was about all I was able to make it to.  Between work and Miki being a complete terror I couldn't do much else.  Whit on the other hand traveled around to Lichtenstein, Austria, and snowboarding IN Switzerland.  Yea I was a little sad that I wasn't able to go, but it was for the best.  I could be available for work, and it stopped Miki from going completely crazy.  He did manage to actually eat some of Mish's stuff and then throw up on her bed, and then terrorize the kitchen after she left, but if I wasn't around who knew what he was going to do, perhaps eat the couch.

Now we have a bit of a lull with visitors so we can focus on doing things that we want to do, like going out with friends here, or snowboarding, and traveling.  But then again who knows, maybe we wont and will just hoard our money, which is something that I am always up for, as long as we can spend it later on something sweet, like a 50" OLED TV...yea that would be awesome.

Anyway thanks for reading and perhaps the next time there will be something a little bit more interesting, like my thoughts on the Olympics or perhaps even some, strange things that Swiss people do.

Across the Pond Look

So this week is as good as any to write about the Super Bowl, and I am going to.  Don't worry this wont be a breakdown about how the Saints are going to bring pressure and what a 2nd Super Bowl for Manning would mean to his legacy.  No this is going to be what people are going to talk about after the game.

Already people are raising a fuss over commercials that are going to be aired.  The one that has received the most attention is Tebow's pro-life commercial.  We all know that Tebow is outspoken about any of his beliefs.  Some people love him for it, other people hate him.  I am in the middle because I give him credit for not shying away from it, but ESPN has soured me to him because 3 days a week we heard about how great of a person he is.  The main reason for the hoopla around it is that CBS agreed to air it, when there was an unwritten rule amongst stations, FOX being one major player, that they will not show government ads or anything that has to do with such a hot button topic.  Well CBS is apparently ignoring that rule because the Southeastern Conference owns them to put it nicely.  And with Tebow being such a big part of their marketing scheme the past 4 years, how could they turn him down?  I do not have a problem with the decision he has made, or others backing pro-life decisions, I have a problem when a national broadcast company will not show an ad from the opposing viewpoint making it seem that they are on only that side as well.

Another ad that hasn't been getting much attention, except on gaming sites, is that an advertisement for the game Dante's Inferno, yes they made a game about the poem, had to be changed.  The original ad had the tagline "Go to Hell," at the end of the spot.  Yes this may, MAY, be a bit of a oversight on EA's part, but to make them change that but still air the pro-life ad? Pretty sure we will see some cleavage, spaghetti strap bikini's, violent movie ads, violent game ads, and maybe even a missed bleep during the game, but yet "Go to Hell," is the only thing that needs to get changed?  Sorry CBS but that just doesn't seem right.

And to wrap it up, yes I will talk about the game.  The 'Aints actually have a shot at grabbing their first championship in franchise history.  Some would claim that with Manning the Colts will walk over them, but to quote one of my all time favorite analysts, "Not so fast!"  The Saints offense is just as effective as the Colts offense, actually more so because it led the league in scoring.  But in reality it is going to come down to who can make the last defensive stop.  The Saints live and die by the turnover on defense, if they can't get a few they will lose.  But as ball hawking as this defense is, I can see them causing a fumble late in the game.  Here is my prediction...Colts. I can't go against Manning.  They have won every single game they tried to win this year, and I do not see that changing.  But you bet I am going to be rooting for the Saints, if only for Kim Kardashian to agree to marry Reggie Bush because of it and then to find out that he cheated at USC.

A Bite out of Apple

Apple's brand new thing, probably a tablet Mac, a piece of hardware that has already been around since Windows XP, but it is an Apple product so clearly only they can draw this much attention to it, is being announced today.  Yes this does sound like a *sarcasm* great new age of computing *end sarcasm* but sounds like the same old Apple "magic."

The iPod has revolutionized the mp3 player.  Every company out there tries to emulate what they have done.  But they were far from the first, just the first to make it super easy to do.  But I have no problem with it.  I have had many of them, I have loved every one that I have bought or received as a gift, and I think it is a great piece of hardware.  Also the iTunes software to go along with the iPod makes it a great one-two punch for them, and I good way to start making money again, and everyone needs to admit they didn't start making money until the iPod became compatible with Windows.  But then there are the other things that Apple does that bothers me.

The first thing is the attitude that Apple seems to carry with it, or at least the fanboys out there.  This is extremely pertinent to the announcement that is coming later today.  If you look over any tech blog or website the past few weeks there has been massive speculation over what Apple is going to announce.  All signs are pointing towards a tablet.  Now when Dell, Acer, or Gateway came out with tablets years ago it wasn't the biggest thing in the world but it caused a bit of a stir.  But now that Apple is releasing one, the entire tech community has come to a standstill waiting for Apple.  It took them at least 6 years to come out with a tablet machine, and from what ever mockups I can see it doesn't have a hard keyboard, so that will be stuck onscreen, isn't the biggest gripe on the iPhone the LACK of any hard buttons? That it all depends if you can navigate a touch screen that even the most tech savvy people can have troubles with?  (I concede the biggest gripe was the lack of copy and paste but they fixed that...3 years later)  But it doesn't start with table, or iSlate, iTablet, whatever they call it, it starts a few years before.

Anyone remember the Macbook Air?  Yea that is what I thought, you don't really, but it is there in the back of your mind.  It was lauded as a great machine before it was released to the public.  It was light, it was thin, it was fast...ish, the next big thing. Too bad for Apple it didn't revolutionize the world like they thought it would, or even just the laptop market.  The connections weren't laid out very well, you couldn't charge it on a flat surface, and it was before digital distribution really took off so you need to buy an external optical drive to install anything.  It just didn't live up to expectations.

The iPhone was the next big thing to come out from Apple.  Again I have to give Apple credit, they have designed a great product, but it is far from a new idea.  It is just they were able to sit back, wait for others to try and make a phone/media player, and then take the best attributes from all that are out there and throw it into one sleek looking package.  It just really frustrates me when Apple doesn't even acknowledge that it isn't a new idea.  If you look at other phone makers, they all say, Phone A did something great that we are trying to incorporate, and Phone B had a nice keyboard and we are trying to improve upon it, Apple just thumbs their nose at anything else that could have been an inspiration.

To be honest though, it does really boil down to the annoyance that Apple fanboys emanate.  That Apple is the be all end all product.  If it isn't apple, it sucks, truthfully.  Worked with a co-worker, good guy, smart, funny, like him as a person, but he just couldn't stop showing what Apple did better than Windows.  One main point he had was the lack of malware for the Mac.  I agree it doesn't have malware, but it is the fastest machine hacked at major hacking conventions.  There have been viruses before for the machine, it is just the market share isn't enough for hackers.  If someone is going to write a worm, they want it to affect the most people possible.  So if Mac even has a 10% market share of all computers in the world, why would you only want to affect 10% when there are 9 times more people out there you can annoy?

OK you can go back to your iPhones and iPods and walk on your merry way now.  But just remember that Apple is a niche.  It has a price premium, cheapest laptop is 1000$, you can get a good windows laptop for half that. So before you try and show the world how Macs are better and push it on people, most people don't want to spend the money.  And even if it is a tablet that is coming out, it will be overpriced for what it can do, and it has been done before, except with a full OS that you can use...rant over.

Some odds and ends before my Birthday

It is kind of strange to "celebrate" New Years, I was playing Modern Warfare 2 and when midnight hit told Whit Happy New Years...then went to bed, and then two weeks later have a birthday.  Still can't be as bad as being a Christmas baby, or anything within a week of any major holiday.  But I am going to take this time to write about some things I want to either close up on and/or start anew.  First off, my closing comments about the Twilight "Saga."

In the past I have bashed this series, my wife and anyone who reads this blog knows this.  But I do have a couple things that make me interested in the whole thing.  First off the Eclipse has the potential for me to actually like it.  With the first two movies I didn't like them, but then again I didn't hate them, so I am pretty neutral.  But the third one has some intrigue, we actually get to see werewolves and vampires fight.  I mean how often do you get to see that?  Part of the main draw of the Underworld series was this and man those were some awesome fights.  I understand that the gore level will have to be toned down a bit from those scenes but the still can make for some interesting movie making.  Next up I am extremely interested in the character Jasper.  To me he has the most interesting back story for all the characters, well Carlisle has a good one too but we are talking about Jasper here.  He was created to be part of a vampire army, a frickin army of super strong vampires.  In the Twilight canon newborns are stronger than almost any other vampire they come up against, and they have a severe bloodlust, i still have problems with Bella not having to deal with it.  He was then turned into a general of sorts in this army and turned many of his "troops." Just imagine how awesome it would be to either read about or watch anything that has to deal with that time period with Jasper. Blood would be everywhere and then it would close with him meeting Alice and she helps him walk away from all the destruction...hmmm I'm getting too excited about this, subject change.

As everyone knows I am a huger gamer.  I play a little thing called World of Warcraft.  I have even gone so far as to buying an authenticator for it to make sure my account doesn't get hacked, Whit uses one to check on the bank account.  At first I wasn't interested in the Warcraft movie coming up because there wasn't a director their wasn't a writer, I was afraid it was going to go by the way of the Halo movie.  But recent developments have me super excited.  Sam Raimi is the director, when given the reins to a movie he does very well, Robert Rodat is the writer, he was a writer on Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot, and now neither of them have anything to do right now.  Spider Man 4 has been canned and Sam said that he would move on from Spider Man to Warcraft.  So I have deduced that Sam should be moving directly to the Warcraft project and things can start to move, casting, scripts, storyboards, all that good stuff.  Here's hoping it DOESN'T end up like the Halo project.

And my lol moment of the week, a 42 year old mother of 4 from Texas, met up with a 16 year old boy, sorry neither a guy nor a man yet, in Canada for a rendezvous.  They met through Wow, but can we please not blame Wow in this.  Yes Wow was the medium in which they met, but it did not tell them, "It is a good idea for us to do this.  You should leave your family behind to go meet some teenager."  /facepalm

And last but not least, I'm gonna miss EVZ.  Even though last week I went by myself, Whit was sick, tired, physically and mentally, I still loved the game.  Everyone is into it, the "student sections" are amazing, the game is a pleasure to watch, and where else can you get a brat in one hand and a dinner roll in the other?  Also it could be I just like hockey and not being able to go every week is going to be a little bit of a downer.  It is a different game here than in the US.  It is really tough to explain though.  They don't drag on for 4 hours but that is due to the lack of TV breaks.  But then that is offset by the amount of adverts on the ice and on the players themselves.  The purists would say that all the ads destroy the integrity of the game, but how does stopping for 5 minutes every 5 minutes of game time not destroy the integrity of the game?  Anyway they also don't hit as much, which is a bit disappointing but keeps the puck moving and stops the trap game that teams in the NHL use.  They also seem to be more stick happy because of it, they whack on players, try little hooks, more poke checks, it just keeps the play moving.  Plus the rinks are wider but shorter, so it is harder to try and trap the puck when the walls aren't so close together. Anyway I love it, can't wait for Friday.

That is it for now, I am sure something else will grab my attention within the week and expect me to write about it, good or bad.
